The Bridges of Pakistan

Every year, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) puts out a very beautiful calendar on bridges all over the world. However there has never been any bridge from Pakistan on this calendar. There is not without reason. In the last six decades, Pakistan has not built a bridge of any aesthetic or architectural value.
Other than rail and road bridges, Pakistan also has numerous dams and barrages over major rivers. These are river blockage structures and gated spillways to control water flow and are often used for road traffic as well.

Rail traffic, however, requires heavier bridges than does the road traffic. Again unfortunately Pakistan Railway has hardly built any new rail lines since the British period. The railway system in Pakistan is almost one and half century old. The system is antiquated and so are the bridges. However at the time when some of these bridges were built, their design and construction like the Eiffel Tower in Paris was innovative enough that they were considered as engineering marvels of that time.

In the hilly areas of Kashmir, Frontier and Balochistan the bridges were and still are being built to cross valleys and the river gorges. These may be high bridges but their spans are generally short and foundations are placed either on dry land or in shallow waters of seasonal rivers and streams. Very often these are masonry arched structures with some use of steel beams and trusses, even though one occasionally comes across those single span rope bridges thrown over the river waters gushing through the narrow gorges. Pretty as they look, these rope bridges are not permanent structures and could be dangerous to vehicle crossing.

The biggest challenge in bridge building in Pakistan comes at the crossings of the five major rivers in Punjab and the Indus River in Sindh respectively. None of the governments of the past, imperial or otherwise, attempted to construct permanent bridges over these rivers as rivers were almost always used as another line of defense against invaders from the north and west. That is one reason one sees major old forts all along the south and east sides of the rivers and no permanent bridges. Invading armies waited till the end of the summer and crossed the rivers by using boat bridges constructed by tying boats side by side with ropes and then placing wooden planks to provide the smooth riding surface.

British on the other hand, after conquering the areas now constituting Pakistan in mid nineteen century moved the first line of defense all the way to the top of Hindu Kush Mountains. Thus freeing themselves to span the major rivers with permanent structures for both road and rail use. An era of large permanent bridge structures dawned in areas now constituting Pakistan.
Starting from north, the Attock Bridge on river Indus and the Jhelum Bridge over river Jhelum, both near the cities of the same names respectively, are noteworthy. Also are the rail bridges over river Chenab near Wazirabad and over river Ravi near the capital city of Lahore.

These are all truss structures made of smelted iron fabricated one unit at a time from structural steel. Although labor intensive these structures could be erected without the benefit of heavy industrial complexes or construction machinery. These are multi span bridges with masonry foundations constructed within the river beds. Even though the modern techniques of using coffer dams to construct large masonry footings in water were not available, the engineers were able to temporarily divert the rivers to the other side and thus construct the footings in dry grounds. Spanning of the five rivers allowed the colonial rulers to connect Punjab and beyond to their Imperial capital Delhi located in the Ganges valley in northern India.

The real engineering challenge for the bridge builders came with the need to link Punjab with Sindh by crossing river Sutlej and Sindh with Balochistan by crossing river Indus. Sites near the cities of Bahawalpur and Sukher were selected for the river crossings. These two bridges now in Pakistan are often referred in the history books.

William St. John Galwey, (1833-1891) an Irishman from Cork County was called upon to construct the Bridge over Sutlej. Earlier in his capacity as railway engineer he had successfully completed the construction of the Jhelum Bridge. The Sutlej Bridge also known as Adam Wahan Bridge is the only rail bridge over Sutlej River in Pakistan. Its opening ceremonies were scheduled to coincide with the coronation of Queen Victoria and hence in her honor was named The Empress Bridge.

The lander finished its work on Mars this month, and its team of scientists continues to analyze information that Phoenix sent home during more than five months of operating at a landing site in the Martian arctic. It landed on May 25, 2008.

The lander's robotic arm delivered soil samples to onboard laboratory instruments that analyzed the composition and examined particles microscopically.

"For 21 years, Popular Science's Best of What's New awards honor the innovations that make a positive impact on life today and change our views of the future," said Mark Jannot, editor-in-chief of the magazine.

One of the most important developments in the long-term improvements in aviation safety was the jet engine. Between 1946 and 1958, the United States averaged three major plane accidents and 42 fatalities a year in accidents caused primarily by engine failures. Since the introduction of the passenger jet in the late 1950s, the number of crashes due to engine failure plummeted, as did the total number of plane accidents.
While traditional piston engines improved greatly through the 1930s and '40s, they did not offer satisfactory reliability. In fact, as power increased (an objective in developing military planes), reliable endurance tended to decrease. By the 1950s, the best piston engines available could only run 1,500 to 2,000 hours before they required overhauls.
All this changed with the jet engine. In 1958, National Airlines launched its jet service between New York and Miami. These early jet engines extended the "time between overhaul" (TBO) to 6,200 hours and then to 20,000 hours. Today, with proper maintenance, jet engines can perform up to 50,000 hours before a complete overhaul is needed.

The increased performance level of jet engines affects safety in a number of ways. Most obviously, the reliability of jet engines ensures that crashes due to engine failure are uncommon events. Jet engines also allow planes to fly longer and faster, enabling planes to travel to a different airport if their original destination proves unsafe for landing. Finally, powerful jet engines allow planes to fly above dangerous storms and turbulence.

Air Pallets - Warehouse Equipment for Moving Loads of Fixed Size and Shape

Here is a very useful addition to our range of aluminum transporters - the Air Pallet Transporter.

These air pallets are particularly suitable for use as warehouse equipment or in other similar type facilities.

Air Pallets are ideal for situations that require heavy load moving of standard shapes and sizes. They are equipped with a push handle assembly at the rear which allows the operator tighter control of the operational settings. The push handle assembly houses twin handlebar grips, trigger switch to start and stop operation, main air inlet from shop air supply, and air balancing valves to ensure that all air bearings are receiving the correct amount of air in relation to the weight of the load and the condition of the floor on which the air pallet is operating.

Air pallets have a low profile of around 2+ inches, and are easily moved on a thin film of air that is created when the air bearings are powered by regular compressed shop air. Omni-directional control is a breeze for just one person (for loads of up to 3 tons) via the handlebars on the push assembly. Air is directed to the air bearings via a trigger switch set just below one of the handles. What could be easier for pallet handling?

Air pallets are able to move heavy loads from just 500 pounds to 20 tons and beyond, are available in many width sizes - starting around 3ft. - and are easily customized to suit the customer's specifications - ranging from the footprint size of the pallet, to a pick and lift air pallet that is able to lift its load vertically before floating it off to its destination. The pick and lift system is especially useful if the customer is using low profile air pallets to hold the load, instead of setting the load directly on the air pallet. For repetitive movements of same size loads within a factory or warehouse facility, these air pallets are likely to provide an ideal solution to your heavy load moving equipment needs.

Warehouse Equipment: When used for this purpose, these air pallets really do make short work of repetitive load movements of fixed size loads. Simply drop the load onto the air pallet, pull the air activation trigger and whisk the load of to its destination. All you need is an air supply line.

Note: Due to the location of the push handle assembly, it is not advisable to carry loads that require an overhang of the air pallet. Overhangs are not usually recommended, but where there are no alternatives we would recommend checking out our regular Aluminum Transporters.

Caterpillar Introduces Larger Capacity 740 Articulated Truck

Caterpillar introduces the 740 articulated truck with expanded capacity—now 43.5 tons (39.5 metric tons), the biggest payload of all the 40-ton size class articulated trucks. Expanded capacity enables greater productivity and lower cost per ton in high volume earthmoving applications. The expanded capacity truck body handles 31.4 cubic yards (24 cubic meters).

The 740 with expanded capacity features differential locks that can be engaged and disengaged on the go for faster cycle times in challenging underfoot conditions and on steep grades. The 740 delivers excellent flotation and traction to haul efficiently in difficult terrain. The 740 with expanded capacity maintains the Cat® articulated truck world class ride comfort, which also contributes to faster cycle times.

A Cat C15 engine with ACERT® Technology powers the truck and delivers 453 net horsepower (338 kW) while optimizing fuel efficiency to get more work done per unit of fuel. The responsive engine employs advanced intake air management and precise combustion control to meet exhaust emissions regulatory requirements—U.S. EPA Tier 3 and EU Stage IIIa—without the exhaust gas recirculation system used on competitive engines.

Productive drive train and suspension
The 7-speed automatic transmission features individual clutch modulation to ensure constant shift times even when the oil is cold. Controlled throttle shifting reduces power train stress and clutch wear by coordinating engine speed, torque converter lock-up and transmission clutch engagements.

The differential locks on the 740 articulated truck features oil-cooled clutch disc plates for reliable and durable operation. The operator simply chooses a level of lock-up using the dash switch and activates the system via a foot button. There is no need to stop the truck before engaging or disengaging either of the two lock-up modes.

The Cat designed oil over nitrogen front suspension system is built to last and protect the frame from shock loads. The three-point front suspension oscillates plus and minus 6 degrees to provide a smooth ride, allowing the operator to travel at speed over rough terrain and softening impact loads on structures and components. Superior ride quality allows the operator to feel confident at high speed and ultimately results in better productivity.

The latest rear suspension blocks are designed and built by Caterpillar, and the mounts have as much as five times the life of previous designs. Multi-plate, oil-immersed, enclosed brakes are fitted to both front and center axles. These brakes provide outstanding stopping capability while maintaining maximum durability.

The hitch is a unique two-piece design. A durable, cast steel head is bolted to a forged steel tube for long, trouble-free operation.

Built for comfort and serviceability
The spacious, center-mounted cab has both an operator seat and a forward-facing, full-size trainer seat to support proper and thorough training of entry-level operators. The operator seat is a fully adjustable air-suspension seat that offers an excellent ride and reduces fatigue over long workdays. The steering column telescopes and tilts to allow adjusting for the operator.

The low, sloping hood and placement of the cooling package behind the cab give the operator excellent all-around visibility. The large glass area and central operator position also aid the view of the work area.

The electrical system is robust and durable. The color-coded wires are stamped with circuit identification numbers. The harnesses are well supported throughout their lengths, and they feature heavy-duty Deutsch connectors and braiding for superior resistance to abrasion.

Midsize asphalt rollers can help you move up the paving ladder

Your niche is paving small driveways, but maybe it's time to move up to bigger driveways, parking lots, and possibly secondary road paving projects.

That one-ton roller works great on smaller paving jobs, but you know you will need a bigger and faster unit to handle larger projects. Just how much bigger is one question contractors need to answer before making a jump to a midsize roller. Drum size, vibratory frequency, special features, and compatibility with present and future applications all come into play when thinking about moving up the paving ladder.

"Contractors will see a lot of changes in rollers when they move from a one-ton to a midsize roller," says Shane Sirmons, marketing manager for Sakai America. "The most obvious is the engine as they move from gas to diesel. Smaller rollers also have a lower drum frequency. Higher frequencies become very important on larger paving projects where roller operators have to move fast to get the job done."

Sakai America offers three roller models in the 3-ton category, with 39-, 47-, and 51-inch drums. Sirmons notes that the 47-inch drum is a likely candidate for contractors looking to move into the small parking lot market. As a rule of thumb, he adds, three-ton rollers are ideal for 50-car lots, but operators will need to consider larger rollers, possibly those in the seven and eight ton category, to handle larger Wal-Mart type parking lots.

Age old concept
"You have to make sure the machine that you buy will get the job done," says Hamm America Marketing Manager Bruce Monical. "The age-old concept still applies: the heavier the hammer the faster the job gets done. The name of the game is the same, too, no matter what size job contractors are paving. The goal is to keep water out of the new pavement, and compacting hot asphalt with a vibratory roller works best in most applications."
